The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has placed new restrictions on social gatherings within its campuses, banning all events from continuing beyond 6:00 p.m.

The decision follows the killing of businessman Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, who was fatally stabbed on September 12 during a bonfire night organized by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

In a statement, the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Egwu, said the directive is intended to strengthen security and prevent a repeat of such tragedies.

According to the statement, the student-organized event, meant as a harmless celebration, was hijacked by miscreants from a nearby community who sparked violence that led to Nweze’s death.

“In light of what happened, management has directed that all social events on campus must now take place only in the daytime, under the supervision of the University Security Unit,” the university said.
“No event of this nature will be allowed to continue past 6:00 p.m. on any of our campuses.”

Describing the incident as “tragic and avoidable,” UNN assured students, staff, and the wider public of its commitment to ensuring a safer environment for academic and social activities.
