A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz Abubakar Malami, bail in the sum of N200 million each as they face trial over allegations bordering on terrorism financing and unlawful possession of firearms.
The charges were filed against them by the Department of State Services.
In a ruling delivered on Friday, the trial judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, ordered that both defendants be remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre pending the fulfilment of their bail conditions.
The court directed Malami and his son to produce two sureties each, one of whom must own landed property in either Maitama or Asokoro within Abuja. The judge further ordered that the title documents of such property be deposited with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court alongside valid international passports.
The sureties are also required to depose to affidavits of means and submit two recent passport photographs each, while the defendants themselves must surrender their international passports and provide recent photographs to the court.
Justice Abdulmalik subsequently fixed March 4 for the commencement of trial.
The DSS had arraigned the former minister and his son on a five-count charge alleging terrorism-related offences and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, said to have occurred between 2022 and 2025.
Prosecutors allege that Malami, during his tenure as Attorney-General, knowingly failed to prosecute suspected terrorism financiers whose case files were forwarded to his office. The charge also accuses both defendants of possessing a firearm and ammunition without licence at their residence in Birnin Kebbi.
The defendants are expected to remain in custody until they meet the bail conditions imposed by the court.
