Court Clears PDP to Hold National Convention in Ibadan

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been given the green light to proceed with its national convention, following a new ruling by the High Court sitting in Oyo State.

Justice A. L. Akintola, in a judgment delivered on Monday, ordered the PDP and its Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to go ahead with the convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The ruling effectively nullifies a previous restraining order granted by the Federal High Court in Abuja last week, which had temporarily halted the convention.

The Abuja order had come after three party officials — Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP Chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia PDP Chairman), and Turnah George (South-South PDP Secretary) — filed a suit alleging that preparations for the convention breached the PDP Constitution and due process.

They argued that the planned exercise failed to comply with both the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, and had urged the court to stop the event entirely.

However, in the latest ruling, Justice Akintola sided with the Oyo-based applicant, Folahan Malomo Adelabi, who sought an order permitting the convention to proceed as planned, emphasizing that internal party affairs should not be unnecessarily obstructed by litigation.

The PDP convention is expected to produce new national officers and redefine the opposition party’s leadership direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
