The Federal Government has ordered the immediate shutdown of 47 Federal Unity Colleges across the country following rising security threats, especially attacks targeting schools in parts of the North.
The directive, issued in a circular on Friday, warned of “heightened security risks in several regions” and stressed the urgent need to protect students and staff from potential attacks. The decision was approved by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, with the circular signed on his behalf by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Binta Abdulkadir.
According to the notice, the closure takes immediate effect, and all affected principals have been directed to comply without delay. The move comes on the heels of recent school attacks in Kebbi and Niger states, where several students were abducted.
The circular noted: “Sequel to the recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breach, the Honourable Minister of Education has approved the immediate closure of 47 federal unity colleges.”
