American entertainment magazine Billboard has come under fire on social media after describing Nigerian singer Rema as a “one-hit wonder.”

The controversy followed the magazine’s February 16, 2026 post on X, where it reshared a June 2025 chart article ranking the artiste at number six on its list of the 25 Biggest One-Hit Wonders of the 21st Century. The ranking was tied to the global success of his song Calm Down, particularly its remix featuring American pop star Selena Gomez.

Billboard noted that while the track became a major crossover hit, the singer had not returned to the Hot 100 since the collaboration, though he recorded multiple top-10 entries on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart as of June 2025.

The resurfaced post sparked widespread criticism online, with many fans and commentators accusing the publication of downplaying the artiste’s global impact and consistent commercial success.

Several users argued that the classification ignored his streaming numbers, international tours, and influence in promoting Afrobeats worldwide, insisting that chart performance in the United States alone should not define his career trajectory.

The debate highlights ongoing tensions around how African artistes are evaluated in Western music metrics, with supporters saying Rema’s broader achievements extend well beyond a single crossover hit.
