Operatives of the Benue State Police Command have arrested three individuals linked to the recent deadly assault on the Anwule community in Ohimini Local Government Area, which claimed several lives, including that of a pastor.

The suspects, identified as Isah Peter and Moses Peter from Agatu LGA, along with a Fulani herdsman, were apprehended after weeks of investigation.

Isah, who serves as acting commander of the Eguma community vigilante group, allegedly used a community-owned firearm to carry out the attack. In an interview after his arrest, 22-year-old Isah admitted acting under the orders of a man known only as “Pepper,” who reportedly supplied the weapon. He also confessed to involvement in several violent incidents along the Otukpo–Oweto highway.

Over the past year, the Otukpo–Oweto corridor has become notorious for abductions, k!llings, and attacks on travellers, prompting residents to restrict travel to daylight hours or police-convoyed trips.

Reacting to the arrests, human rights activist Meddy Olotu condemned the violence, saying: “It is shocking that those entrusted with community protection have become instruments of terror. Security agencies must conduct a full investigation to restore safety along the Otukpo–Oweto highway.”

The Benue Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with further arrests expected as authorities work to dismantle the criminal network behind the attacks.
