Former presidential candidate and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has alleged that the Federal Government is making efforts to prevent him from contesting in the 2027 presidential election, while also admitting uncertainty over securing his party’s ticket.
Speaking in a video message, Obi called for a free, fair, and credible electoral process, insisting that Nigerians deserve a transparent system.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria does not want me to contest in the 2027 presidential election. We are not asking for much. They already have the governors and ministers; we are only asking for a free and fair election,” he said.
Reflecting on his political journey, Obi recounted past challenges, including political isolation, impeachment, and legal battles, noting that such experiences have prepared him for future obstacles.
“I have been in this very difficult business where people abandoned you completely for one election. I spent three years in court and no one followed me there. I have been impeached and removed from office twice,” he said.

Despite his ambitions, Obi acknowledged that his emergence as the ADC presidential candidate is not guaranteed.
“Someone asked me how I know for sure that the ADC will give me the presidential ticket. I cannot be certain. What matters is that we are committed to a cause,” he stated.
He also expressed concerns about political alliances, questioning the reliability of partners within the opposition.
“How can we be certain that the people we’re working with right now won’t leave us behind tomorrow? I wish we could be sure, but we can’t,” he added.
The former presidential candidate, who previously ran under the Labour Party, reaffirmed his commitment to his political goals, stating that alleged pressures or threats would not deter him.
Obi further appreciated his supporters for their continued loyalty despite the challenges of opposition politics in Nigeria.
“I thank you for your sacrifice. It’s not easy to be in the opposition in Nigeria, and I’m thankful to those who keep supporting even when there’s no clear reward,” he said.
