Professor Joash Amupitan has pledged to carry out a comprehensive audit of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with particular focus on the logistics of the 2023 general elections, to identify challenges and develop practical solutions in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Amupitan made this known on Thursday during his screening at the Committee of the Whole in the Senate.
Citing a Supreme Court ruling, he clarified that the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IREV) was not part of the commission’s official results collation system, as widely believed by many Nigerians during the 2023 polls.
“A lot of people thought it was part of the results collation system, but the Supreme Court said it is not,” he explained.
The law professor also emphasized the need to establish a dedicated Electoral Offences Commission to investigate and prosecute electoral crimes, noting that INEC currently lacks the capacity to perform such functions effectively.
“INEC does not have the capacity for investigation and prosecution at the moment,” Amupitan stated.
