Aisha Yesufu Accuses Nigerian Leaders of Political Genocide Against Christians

Sociopolitical activist, Aisha Yesufu, has accused Nigerian political leaders of perpetuating what she described as a “political genocide” against Christians in the country.

Yesufu made the claim on Tuesday in a post on X (formerly Twitter) while responding to comments by American comedian and television host, Bill Maher, who had drawn global attention to the killings of Christians in Nigeria.

Maher, in his statement, said: “I’m not a Christian, but they are systematically killing Christians in Nigeria. They’ve killed over 100,000 since 2009. They’ve burned 18,000 churches. These are the Islamists, Boko Haram.”

Reacting, Yesufu criticized those she described as hypocritical political supporters who had previously downplayed the plight of northern Christians during the 2023 elections.

“You are shouting that Northern Christians are being persecuted but you championed a Muslim-Muslim ticket! Their Christianity was not Christian enough for you during the 2023 election,” she wrote.

She further accused them of ignoring the marginalization of Christians in the political space, adding, “Your hypocrisy stinks to high heavens. When will you talk about the Northern Christians’ political genocide?”
