Super Eagles right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel has spoken out about his on-field altercation with Algerian forward Anis Hadj Moussa during Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in Marrakech at the weekend.
The tense moment occurred in the 68th minute when Osayi-Samuel attempted to shield the ball from Hadj Moussa. The Algerian reacted by shoving the Nigerian defender, prompting Osayi-Samuel to confront him. The situation escalated when Hadj Moussa reportedly pushed Osayi-Samuel, leading Senegalese referee Issa Sy to intervene and issue a yellow card to the Algerian.
“I was agitated because he punched my face. He hit my face, you know, and I overreacted,” Osayi-Samuel admitted in a post-match interview. “In the moment, we were winning 2-0, so really and truly I should not have done it, I should’ve just ignored it, but you know I overreacted. It’s football, you know.”
The victory secured Nigeria’s place in the semi-finals, thanks to second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams. However, the match ended in chaos as Algerian players and fans expressed fury over perceived unfair decisions. Reports indicate that some Algerian players attempted to confront the match officials, while security personnel had to intervene to prevent assaults on referee Issa Sy and his assistants.
The incident also spilled into the stands, with Algerian fans reportedly trying to breach barriers and vandalize parts of the stadium.
In response to the violent incidents, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation, reviewing reports from referees, security personnel, and media representatives to determine the causes and consequences of the unrest.
