Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has cautioned the Nigerian national team against distractions ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash with Algeria in Morocco.

Mikel said the team must remain focused and united, especially amid reports that players and coaching staff declined to travel to Marrakech over unpaid match bonuses.

Nigeria are scheduled to face Algeria on Saturday night in the quarter-final of the 2025 AFCON, but it is understood that bonuses for the four matches played so far are yet to be settled.

The Super Eagles have impressed at the tournament, recording victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda in the group stage before thrashing Mozambique 4–0 in the Round of 16.

Reacting to the situation, Mikel urged the players to block out distractions and remain committed to their title ambition.

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, the former Chelsea midfielder said the team must approach the Algeria match with the right mindset.

“We need to win the next game, and we have to play it the right way because it’s going to be a very difficult match against Algeria,” Mikel said.

“I’ve watched them play a couple of times. They are a very strong team and work well together. They have some really good and talented players, so we must give our best performance.”

Mikel stressed that off-field issues should not affect the team’s focus.

“There should be nothing that blocks the way or affects our concentration. We have to be prepared to deal with any problems that may arise,” he said.

However, he also acknowledged the importance of resolving the bonus issue promptly.

“Are the players being paid their bonuses? Whatever was promised should be sorted out before the game begins. I truly believe this team can go all the way and win the trophy,” Mikel added.
