Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has ignited fresh political debate after signaling a possible return to the presidential race ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, 77, made the remarks during a brief interaction with journalists, a clip of which has gone viral on his official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) handle. When asked about his presidential ambition, the seasoned politician replied with a smile:
“We will let you know. We will give you a formal announcement.”
Pressed further on the likelihood of securing his party’s ticket, he responded confidently:
“Have I ever failed to get the ticket? I’m confident.”
Responding to growing public calls for younger presidential contenders, Atiku emphasized the inclusive nature of democratic systems.
“Let the youths contest now. It’s democracy,” he stated.
Although Atiku is traditionally associated with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), speculation is growing over his possible alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—a party that reportedly includes other high-profile politicians like former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who has also expressed interest in the 2027 race.
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi—another key figure within the broader coalition—has equally affirmed his intention to run again in the next election.
Atiku’s recent comments suggest he has no plans to step aside for any aspirant under the emerging coalition of opposition forces, signaling a potentially crowded field as the 2027 race begins to take shape.
