The death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Ogun State has sparked an ongoing investigation, with an official of the National Youth Service Corps, Abass Olalekan, now in police custody.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South LGA, reportedly died last Tuesday after complications arising from a terminated pregnancy.
Sources alleged that the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI) was involved in a relationship with the deceased, which led to the pregnancy and subsequent events surrounding her death. Police sources confirmed that Olalekan has been arrested and is currently being held at the command headquarters in Eleweran.
Authorities noted that the situation raises concerns over professional boundaries, particularly involving officials responsible for corps members under their supervision.
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the case is being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department, adding that investigations are ongoing.
The incident follows a similar tragedy last month involving another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who died under yet-to-be-explained circumstances in the same area. Police, however, stated that both cases are not connected.
