65-Year-Old Farmer and Ailing Wife Allegedly Beaten by Sons Over Land Sale in India

A 65-year-old farmer and his ailing wife were allegedly assaulted with wooden sticks by their two sons over the sale of a parcel of land belonging to the woman in Indapur, Pune district, India.

The incident reportedly occurred around 6pm on August 30 while Tukaram Kisan Raut and his wife, Anjana Raut, were taking an evening walk in their village.

According to the police, the couple’s sons, Sanjay Raut and Rajendra Raut, allegedly arrived in a car and confronted their parents over the sale of the land.

The brothers allegedly abused their parents and demanded that they cancel the land deal and take back the property. They reportedly proceeded to assault the couple with wooden sticks and threatened them with further harm if the sale was not reversed.

Tukaram sustained injuries to his back, face, thighs and left shoulder, while his wife was allegedly injured on her right wrist and waist, according to the complaint filed with the police.

Passers-by who witnessed the incident reportedly alerted the police, who arrived at the scene and took the couple to Indapur Sub-District Hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, Tukaram lodged a complaint against his sons at the Indapur police station.

Police subsequently registered a case against the two brothers under provisions of India’s Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means, criminal intimidation and intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace.

The couple’s sons reportedly live separately with their respective families in Malwadi No. 2, Indapur.

A video of the alleged assault, reportedly recorded by people at the scene, has also surfaced on social media.
