WASE, Plateau State — Tragedy struck the mining community of Zurak in Wase Local Government Area after at least 37 miners were confirmed dead and dozens more hospitalised following suspected gas poisoning at an underground mining site.

The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, is believed to have been caused by exposure to toxic fumes, suspected to be carbon monoxide, trapped within the mining shaft. (ZAgazola)

Local sources and community leaders said the miners had dug deep underground before encountering the deadly gas, which caused suffocation and instant fatalities. Survivors were rescued and rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment. (Legit.ng – Nigeria news.)

A youth leader in the area, Shafi Sambo, confirmed the deaths, explaining that the victims were working at the site when the toxic gas spread through the tunnel. He added that some miners were pulled out alive and are currently receiving treatment. (Legit.ng – Nigeria news.)

Security personnel have since sealed off the mining site to prevent further exposure and to allow authorities to assess the situation and begin investigations.

Online reactions have been swift, with many Nigerians expressing grief and anger over recurring mining tragedies linked to unsafe practices and poor regulation.

On social media, users described the incident as “avoidable,” calling for stricter enforcement of mining safety standards. Others urged government authorities to clamp down on illegal and unregulated mining operations, warning that communities continue to bear the cost of negligence.

The latest disaster has reignited concerns about safety conditions in informal mining operations across Plateau State and other mineral-rich regions, where inadequate regulation and hazardous working environments have repeatedly led to fatal accidents.

As families mourn their loved ones, community leaders are calling for urgent reforms, improved oversight, and stronger safety protocols to prevent further loss of life.
