The 3 Division of the Nigerian Army on Friday, January 16, 2026, held its West African Social Activities (WASA) 2025 at the Parade Ground of Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, Plateau State.

The annual event, which marks the conclusion of the Division’s training activities for the year, provided an opportunity for officers, soldiers, their families, and members of the host community to interact and celebrate unity, culture, and shared values. Activities at the event included colourful cultural displays, tug-of-war competitions, and exhibitions of traditional cuisines presented by various units and formations.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of awards to 35 outstanding soldiers in recognition of their dedication, professionalism, and exemplary service. Some of the award recipients also received cash prizes and electric motorcycles as part of efforts to motivate and enhance troop welfare.
The Plateau State Government used the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in sustaining peace and security across the state. Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, who was represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, mni, conveyed the message while inspecting the quarter guard upon arrival at the venue. The Governor’s representative was received by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division Nigerian Army.
Governor Mutfwang described WASA as a strong demonstration of the enduring bond, mutual trust, and cordial relationship between the people of Plateau State and the Nigerian Army. He commended the Army for its sacrifices and contributions to peace, security, and national unity, noting that Plateau State is steadily reclaiming its identity as the “Home of Peace and Tourism.”

The Governor expressed appreciation to the Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General W.D. Shaibu, for their continuous support and deployment of troops to Plateau State. He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his unwavering support to the Nigerian military and the people of Plateau State.
In his remarks, the General Officer Commanding, 3 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Folunsho Oyinlola, welcomed guests to the cantonment and described the occasion as a celebration of unity, culture, and collective achievements. He noted that WASA remains a cherished tradition in the Nigerian Army, dating back to the pre-independence era, and serves as a platform for fostering camaraderie and strengthening bonds among personnel and their families.
Major General Oyinlola said the 2025 WASA was particularly significant as it marked the final major social activity of the Division for the year, while also setting the tone for renewed commitment in 2026. He appreciated the cooperation and synergy between the Army, other security agencies, and host communities in Plateau State, stressing that peace and security can only be sustained through collective effort.
The GOC also disclosed that the Division is currently conducting Operation Peace Shield, aimed at consolidating the relative peace enjoyed during the Yuletide season. He urged personnel to remain disciplined, vigilant, and security conscious at all times, in line with the Armed Forces Code of Conduct.
He further expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff for his leadership and commitment to improving troop welfare, training, and operational effectiveness, noting that several training activities conducted in 2025 have enhanced the combat readiness and professionalism of troops under the Division.
Major General Oyinlola commended the Plateau State Government for its consistent support and cooperation, describing the relationship between the Army and the state as invaluable. He also thanked families of officers and soldiers for their sacrifices and support.
The event culminated with the beat of the retreat and the lightning up of the burn fire. The Plateau State Government reiterated its resolve to continue working closely with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to maintain peace and stability in the state, while calling on all stakeholders to support ongoing efforts to ensure lasting security across Plateau State.
