Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing livestock development in Nigeria, citing the state’s unique strengths and resources as key drivers of the sector’s growth.
Governor Mutfwang made this known while hosting the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, led by Prof. Attahiru Jega, during a courtesy visit and stakeholders’ engagement forum at the New Government House, Rayfield, Jos.
Commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for launching the initiative, the Governor described it as a practical step toward resolving farmer-herder conflicts, boosting the nation’s economy, and addressing security challenges.
“I congratulate Mr. President for taking decisive steps to revive the livestock sector. Northern Nigeria, particularly Plateau State, is well-positioned to lead this transformation,” Governor Mutfwang said. “This initiative offers a chance to de-escalate conflicts, create jobs, grow our GDP, and advance technology.”
He announced plans to establish the Ministry of Livestock Development in Plateau State by January 2025, a move aimed at driving the implementation of the reforms locally. Emphasizing the state’s competitive advantage, including skilled human resources and a conducive climate, the Governor stressed the need for inclusive policies that prioritize conflict resolution and sustainable development.
“A secure environment is not the presence of soldiers but the absence of conflict,” he noted. “We must implement strategies that foster a progressive, productive, and profitable livestock ecosystem.”
Prof. Attahiru Jega, Co-Chairman of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, lauded Governor Mutfwang’s commitment to the initiative. He described Plateau as a strategic partner in transforming the livestock sector and assured the Governor of the committee’s support.
“Plateau State has the capacity to lead Nigeria’s livestock development,” Prof. Jega stated. “The committee, established by the President in July 2024, is working to harness the sector’s potential, which includes job creation, increased productivity, and enhanced economic growth.”
He added that the committee is engaging stakeholders nationwide to promote the initiative and unlock its economic and social benefits.
Hon. Ishaku Bugama, Commissioner of Agriculture, expressed the state’s readiness to drive impactful reforms and position Plateau as a model for livestock development in the country.
The engagement concluded with a shared commitment to building a secure and prosperous future through strategic livestock reforms.
