The Maxwell Khobe Cantonment of the Nigerian Army 3 Division came alive with joy on Saturday, December 28, 2024, as the much-anticipated Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Park was officially opened. The state-of-the-art recreational facility is the brainchild of Mrs. Fibishola Abubakar, Chairperson of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA), 3 Division Chapter.
The park, named after Mrs. Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja, the immediate past NAOWA president, is a result of a vision to provide recreational opportunities for children and families within the barracks. The groundbreaking ceremony and foundation laying were conducted by Mrs. Lagbaja on November 23, 2023.
Major General A. E. Abubakar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of Operation Safe Haven, inaugurated the park, highlighting its significance in boosting troop morale. “The establishment of this park is a testament to our dedication to improving the quality of life for our personnel and their families,” he stated. He noted that the park provides a space for relaxation, recreation, and family bonding, which are crucial for maintaining mental health and morale.
The GOC also acknowledged the efforts of the NAOWA Chairperson and praised the visionary leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. O. O. Oluyede, in enhancing the welfare of troops through various initiatives. He expressed gratitude to Mrs. Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja for her contributions during her tenure as NAOWA president.
In her remarks, Mrs. Fibishola Abubakar described the park as a symbol of community spirit and a safe space for children to play, learn, and grow. “This park is more than just a recreational space; it is a commitment to building a nurturing environment for our children and families,” she said. She also unveiled the NAOWA Children’s Football Club, which aims to promote discipline, teamwork, and perseverance among young members of the community.
The Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Park boasts impressive facilities, including a swimming pool, five-a-side football pitch, trampoline, bouncy castle, electric train, electric bicycles, swings, mini pavilions, gazebos, restaurants, popcorn and shawarma shops, basketball and volleyball courts, and much more. The park is also fully illuminated at night, showcasing its aesthetics and creating a safe space for families to relax after sunset.
Mrs. Fibishola Abubakar emphasized that the park was designed to meet the needs of the barracks community, eliminating the need for families to travel to Jos town for recreational activities. The facility will also serve nearby communities like Jebu Bassa, Dutsen Kura, and Miango.
The park’s opening featured a tour of its facilities, including the synthetic football pitch, multipurpose courts, and children’s play area. A novelty football match by the newly unveiled children’s football clubs added excitement to the event.
Barrister Taldas Okonkwo, CEO of Valentino Resources Ltd., donated N1 million to support the park’s maintenance. The atmosphere was electric as children eagerly explored the park’s attractions, their laughter and excitement filling the air.
The Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Park is expected to create lasting memories for families in the barracks and surrounding communities while fostering unity and relaxation.
