The Bauchi State Government has highlighted its developmental strides under Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration during the visit of Otunba Segun Showunmi, convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as “The Alternative.” The visit to the Government House in Bauchi, took place on December 12, 2024 shortly after the Townhall Meeting which was held at Double 4 International Conference Center, as part of the North East Town Hall Meeting series,
Dr. Aminu Hassan Gamawa, Chief of Staff to the Governor, detailed the governor’s achievements, emphasizing infrastructure, economic reforms, and inclusiveness in governance. He noted significant advancements in aviation connectivity, road infrastructure, and water supply, alongside the establishment of state-of-the-art facilities like an international conference center nearing completion.
“Bauchi has become a hub for national and regional events, with improved security and modern infrastructure attracting visitors from neighboring states. These developments are transforming the state into a center for business, tourism, and hospitality,” Dr. Gamawa remarked.
He also highlighted efforts to increase internally generated revenue (IGR), growing monthly collections from ₦300 million to over ₦1 billion, with a target of ₦3 billion. These reforms, he explained, have been achieved without imposing undue hardship on citizens, through initiatives like land title registration and improved tax collection systems.
Other achievements included the construction and renovation of over 5,000 classrooms, the establishment of 300 functional primary healthcare facilities, and investments in local governance and traditional institutions. Dr. Gamawa emphasized the administration’s focus on inclusiveness, noting that previously marginalized groups, including women and Christian minorities, now actively participate in governance.
Otunba Segun Showunmi, while highlighting the success of the townhall, stressed the need for renewed national unity and active democratic engagement. He urged Nigerians to reject division and tribalism, emphasizing that the nation’s diversity should be a strength rather than a weakness.
“This nation is one, and our similarities far outweigh our differences,” Showunmi said. “Democracy is the greatest hope for the poor. Yet, in 2023, despite 93 million registered voters, only 8 million votes decided the presidency. This is a call for all citizens to reclaim their civic responsibility.”
Showunmi emphasized the importance of holding leaders accountable and fostering a governance system that prioritizes inclusivity and development.
“This movement is not about political parties,” he explained. “It’s about the people. We must educate ourselves, engage in meaningful dialogue, and rebuild trust in democracy.”
As part of his visit to Bauchi, Showunmi paid homage to historical and cultural landmarks, including a stop at the museum at the tomb of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. He also visited the Emir of Bauchi, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr.) Rilwanu Sulaimanu Adamu, CFR, at the Bauchi Emirate.
Showunmi commended the Emirate for its role in fostering peace and unity within the region, emphasizing the importance of traditional institutions in nation-building. The Emir, in turn, lauded Showunmi’s initiative, reiterating the importance of dialogue and collaboration for national progress.
Showunmi praised Bauchi State for its inclusiveness and developmental progress, describing the town hall meetings as platforms for fostering collaboration across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Following the North East session, the initiative will move to Kano for the North West meeting before heading to the southern zones.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to embrace dialogue, accountability, and active participation, warning against the dangers of political apathy and tribalism.
“Democracy requires every citizen to understand their role and rights. The power of one vote can transform lives and communities. Let’s unite to ensure a brighter future for all Nigerians,” he said.
The NOMC’s Alternative initiative seeks to create a platform for addressing critical national issues, aiming to ensure that democracy delivers on its promise of progress, inclusivity, and shared prosperity.
