The Member Representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, Hon. Daniel Asama Ago, today convened a townhall meeting to engage with members of his constituency. The meeting, held at the De Bridge Hotel in Jos, brought together a diverse cross-section of participants, including traditional rulers, civil society representatives, community leaders, security actors and cultural groups.
During his opening remarks, Hon. Asama reaffirmed his commitment to his campaign promise of transparency and accountability, describing himself as a “messenger” sent to represent the people at the federal level. “The essence of this townhall is to give you feedback on my activities and listen to your concerns as we collectively shape the future of our constituency,” he stated.
He acknowledged the diversity of the Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, home to over six indigenous languages and various ethnic groups, including Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and others. Hon. Asama expressed gratitude to all attendees for their participation, particularly the traditional rulers and elders who braved the early morning cold to be present.
Hon. Asama outlined several initiatives and developmental projects achieved during his 10 months in office. He emphasized that his legislative work prioritizes inclusive development and equitable representation for all groups within the constituency.
Some of the achievements highlighted include:
- Security Advocacy: Hon. Asama moved a motion of urgent public importance at the National Assembly, drawing federal attention to the security challenges facing Bassa/Jos North, including cultism, robbery, and communal clashes.
- Youth Empowerment: Through collaboration with football scouts from Manchester City and AS St. Étienne, 20 young footballers were selected, with seven already securing opportunities to travel to Europe.
- Education Support: Payment of WAEC and NECO fees for 600 students, alongside efforts to secure admissions for young people at the University of Jos.
- Employment Opportunities: Facilitation of recruitment into the Nigerian Army, police, and other institutions for qualified constituents.
- Infrastructure Development: Construction of a six-classroom block in an underserved border village, with more projects planned for 2025.
- Community Interventions: Distribution of fertilizer, food palliatives, and school materials to internally displaced persons and vulnerable groups.
Hon. Asama also highlighted his legislative work, noting that he has sponsored 12 bills in his first year, with plans to introduce three more in the coming months.
Hon. Asama reiterated his vision for long-term solutions to the challenges facing the constituency, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and unity. “Our desire is to grow the constituency together. Individual interests must align with collective progress for us to achieve meaningful development,” he said.
The townhall was interactive, with constituents taking the opportunity to ask questions, seek clarification, and share their priorities for the coming year.
As the meeting concluded, Hon. Asama expressed gratitude for the feedback and pledged to continue engaging with his constituents regularly to ensure their voices remain central to his legislative and developmental agenda.
