Salem University, Lokoja, recognized five outstanding individuals for their contributions to society during its 6th Convocation Ceremony held on Thursday, November 29.
Among the awardees were Amb. Yemi Matthew, pastor and CEO of Applause Concepts and Media; Mr. Thompson Yamput, editor with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN); and James Onoja, philanthropist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Others included Mr. Jeremiah Ocheme of African Independent Television (AIT) and Mr. Moses Ebute.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Mr. Alewo Johnson-Akubo, highlighted the awardees’ significant roles in advancing Salem University’s mission and societal development.
Accepting the honor on behalf of the recipients, Onoja expressed gratitude to the university and pledged continued support for its growth and initiatives.
The event featured a public lecture by Prof. Sam Egwu, who stressed the importance of integrating citizenship and national unity into tertiary education curricula. Egwu attributed many of Nigeria’s democratic challenges to a lack of understanding of citizenship and called for educational reforms to foster active citizenship for improved governance and development.
Salem University’s 6th Convocation Ceremony was later followed by other activities on Friday, November 30, at the Convocation Arena in Lokoja.
