In a press conference held at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Jos on October 1, 2024, Hon. Engr. Dalyop Chollom, Member representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency and Chairman of the Labour Party Campaign Council in Plateau State, called for free, fair, and transparent elections as the state gears up for local government polls on October 9, 2024.
Hon. Chollom commended Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for his inclusive and human-oriented policies, which he noted have fostered peaceful coexistence across Plateau State. He praised the Governor’s efforts in promoting interfaith understanding and social cohesion, describing Mutfwang’s leadership as instrumental in ensuring that every citizen feels valued, regardless of tribe, religion, or political affiliation.
However, Hon. Chollom expressed concerns about the neutrality of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), urging the body to ensure that all political parties are given a level playing field. While acknowledging the competence of PLASIEC under its chairman, Hon. Plangji Daniel Chishak, he warned against favoring any political party in the upcoming elections.
“The Labour Party is contesting all positions, from chairmanship to councilorship, and none of our candidates have stepped down for anyone. We strongly refute such unfounded claims,” Chollom declared.
He also condemned the vandalism of Labour Party campaign materials across the state, describing it as undemocratic and calling on PLASIEC to engage stakeholders in a dialogue to address election-related issues.
Hon. Chollom reaffirmed the Labour Party’s commitment to upholding the democratic process, urging PLASIEC to conduct a free and fair election in line with Governor Mutfwang’s assurances. He also called on voters in Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency and Plateau State at large to turn out in large numbers and vote for Labour Party candidates in the October 9 elections.
The press conference concluded with a call for peaceful elections and a commitment from the Labour Party to contest the 2027 general elections in Plateau State.
