The 2024 Africa Religious Freedom Film Festival #ARFFF24, held in Jos, Plateau State, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance, while awarding $3,000 to a film producer who promotes religious rights and tolerance. Organized by Empower Women Media in partnership with Total Stage2Screen Media, the event focused on promoting the right of individuals to practice their religion freely, without fear of attack or stigmatization.
Nigeria has witnessed numerous incidents of discrimination and violence against individuals based on their choice of religion, often resulting in loss of life. In response, the African Religion Freedom Film Festival seeks to foster understanding and respect for diverse religious beliefs, urging citizens to prioritize peaceful coexistence, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or tribe.
Held at Crest Hotel in Jos, the festival brought together a wide range of participants, including religious leaders from Christian and Muslim communities, students, journalists, peace advocates, and law enforcement representatives. Keynote speeches centered on the right to freedom of religion and the promotion of societal cohesion.
Jumoke Fashakin, the event convener from Total Stage2Screen Media, highlighted the significance of the festival, saying, “The essence of today is to create awareness about Article 18, which affirms that every human being has the right to freedom of belief and religion. We hope that today’s event has fostered a safe space for every religion.”
Felix Amade, Country Director of Empower Women Group, added, “Freedom of religion or belief protects human beings, not any specific religion. It ensures that every individual has the right to choose the faith they wish to practice.”
Human rights activist Gloria Puldu emphasized the shared humanity that unites people above all other differences. “What binds us together is our humanity before anything else,” she said. “To have this occasion here today in Jos is truly wonderful.”
Participant Kayla Suleiman also echoed the call for unity, saying, “We should embrace one another despite our religious differences. Humanity should always come first.”
As part of the festival, a film producer who promotes religious rights and tolerance was awarded $3,000. Organizers stressed that beyond the event, residents of Plateau State are encouraged to continue respecting individual religious beliefs in the interest of peace.
The festival was powered by Empower Women Media in partnership with Total Stage2Screen Media.
