The Plateau State House of Assembly has sworn in another lawmaker, Honorable Mark Sunday Nah, representing Jos North West. The swearing-in took place during the assembly’s plenary session today, bringing the total number of lawmakers in the assembly to eighteen.
This development follows the earlier inauguration in April, where Speaker Gabriel Dewan swore in nine lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress (APC) out of the sixteen who were affirmed as duly elected by the Court of Appeal. These lawmakers had successfully appealed against the rulings of the state’s election tribunal, which had initially declared sixteen lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winners.
However, the speaker did not administer the oath of office to all sixteen APC lawmakers at the time, citing a suit reportedly filed by the sacked PDP legislators. Dewan stated that the court had ordered that no further action be taken until the suit was resolved.
Despite this, nine of the APC lawmakers were sworn in at the old government house, where the temporary plenary session was held. Sources indicated that the nine inaugurated lawmakers had agreed to resign after taking the oath of office, while the remaining seven did not agree to these conditions.
The swearing-in of Honorable Mark Sunday Nah today marks the latest development in the ongoing changes within the Plateau State House of Assembly.
