In response to the current unpredictable rainfall patterns, Associate Professor Elias N. Lamle has called on the people of Plateau State to take urgent steps to ensure a hunger-free future for the region. Citing a forecast from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Prof. Lamle highlighted that Plateau State is currently experiencing a “Little Dry Season” that began on July 22, 2024. This dry spell, expected to last 27 days, will end on August 18, followed by the resumption of rains that will create a favorable window for a second cropping season lasting until November.
“Many of our farmers are unaware of this critical weather pattern,” Prof. Lamle stated, emphasizing the importance of spreading this information widely. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that this knowledge reaches every farmer. By preparing to plant new, fast-maturing crops as soon as the rains return on August 18, we can secure a bountiful harvest by November.”
Prof. Lamle urged the Plateau State government, agricultural extension services, and media outlets to collaborate in disseminating this vital information. “The success of our second cropping season depends on our ability to act now,” he added. “We must equip our farmers with the knowledge they need to take advantage of the upcoming rainy period.”
The appeal underscores the critical role of communication and preparedness in safeguarding the state’s food security. With coordinated efforts, Plateau State can navigate the challenges of the current dry spell and work towards a hunger-free future.
