The ongoing “End Bad Governance” protest in Jos, Plateau State, took a tense turn on Sunday, August 4th, as hundreds of protesters flooded Bauchi Road, issuing a stern warning to business owners. In addition to their demands, some businesses in the Bauchi Road area were also vandalized during the unrest.
It was also reported that the protesters demanded that all businesses either join them in the demonstration on Monday or shut down to avoid further damage to their properties.
The protestors expressed deep dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s broadcast earlier in the day, stating that his address failed to tackle the pressing issues facing the nation. They vowed to mobilize more citizens to join their cause, emphasizing that the protest is the only way to effectively voice their concerns to the government.
The demonstrators, a mix of adults and young people, were seen moving through various streets, carrying placards, leaves, and flags from different countries. They warned, “No business tomorrow. Everyone should come out for the protest.”
The main demands of the protesters include the removal of the fuel subsidy and urgent action to address the nation’s worsening insecurity.
In his broadcast, President Tinubu ruled out the return of the fuel subsidy, despite acknowledging the pain the decision has caused. He stated that removing the subsidy was necessary to prevent it from continuing to stifle the country’s economic progress.
“I therefore took the painful yet necessary decision to remove fuel subsidies and abolish multiple foreign exchange systems which had constituted a noose around the economic jugular of our Nation and impeded our economic development and progress,” Tinubu said in his address.
As of the time of this report, the Plateau State government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Jos and Bukuru metropolis, in an effort to restore order and prevent further escalation of the unrest.
