In response to the current economic hardships and rising discontent among citizens, the Voice of Women in Nigeria Leadership Initiative has issued a call to address pressing concerns and uphold the constitutional right to peaceful protest.
The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and protest, a cornerstone of democracy that ensures the voices of the people are heard, especially during times of crisis. With the nation facing severe economic downturns, widespread hunger, and hardship, the cries of the masses cannot and should not be ignored.
As an organization dedicated to promoting economic development, fostering community engagement, and leveraging volunteer support, we unequivocally support the right of Nigerians to protest peacefully. This constitutional right allows citizens to express grievances and demand accountability from the government, serving as a vital mechanism for civic participation and advocacy for change.
We urge the government to:
1. Respect and Uphold the Right to Peaceful Protest: The government must recognize and uphold the constitutional right of the people to peaceful assembly and protest. Any attempt to suppress this right is a violation of democratic principles and an affront to the rule of law.
2. Ensure Maximum Security and Protection for Protesters: The government must provide security and protection for all citizens, including those participating in peaceful protests. The tragic events of the End SARS protest, where mothers lost their children without government accountability, must not be repeated. Security agencies should act with restraint, professionalism, and respect for human rights to ensure the safety of all protesters.
Finally, we highlight that this is a peaceful protest by the youth advocating for economic and infrastructure development and flexible policies. If the government refuses to respond and disregards their cries, women will have no other choice than to defend their children on the streets until justice is established.
We stand with the people in their rightful demand for good governance, transparency, and accountability. It is not too late for the government to heed the call of the masses and take decisive action to address the pressing issues facing our nation. In unity and strength, we can overcome these challenging times and build a better future for all Nigerians.
NO WOMAN, NO NATION!!!
