The Plateau State Government has reiterated its commitment to restoring the beauty and orderliness of the Jos and Bukuru metropolitan areas, in alignment with Executive Order 003. During a recent operation, authorities seized goods from illegal structures and roadside businesses, donating them to the Jos Correctional Center and the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
Arch Hart Bankat, General Manager of the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB), emphasized the state’s dedication to enforcing the executive order. He urged citizens to adhere to regulations and avoid setting up unauthorized structures or engaging in roadside trading.
Bankat, speaking in Jos while delivering seized items to the Jos Correctional Center and the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, emphasized the government’s resolve. The Trailer load of seized items, including clothing, shoes, and toiletries, were handed over to the correctional center and the IDP camp as a demonstration of the government’s actions.
“I see these challenges as hiccups because people are trying to be very stubborn,” Bankat stated. “The executive order was clear, and we are here to demonstrate the actions of law by donating the seized items to the correctional service center and the IDP camp.”
Bankat addressed concerns about relocating traders affected by the order, assuring that alternatives had been provided. “The traders have been adequately relocated. The old burnt-down market was reopened, and spaces were allocated to street traders. Those in satellite markets were informed to return to their designated areas.”
Hon Musa Ashoms, Commissioner for Information and Communication, emphasized the importance of Executive Order 003, signed by Governor Caleb Mutfwang. He highlighted the government’s efforts to enforce the order, which took effect on June 10, 2024. “Those who do not follow the order will have their goods seized and handed over to the correctional centers or IDP camps,” Ashoms stated.
Ashoms also addressed allegations that market leaders were not informed about the enforcement. He countered that extensive publicity and numerous meetings had been conducted with stakeholders, including religious bodies and market representatives.
The deputy controller of corrections at the Jos Custodian Centre, Ponyak Nandang, expressed gratitude for the confiscated items, noting their importance for inmates. “These items will greatly help the inmates, many of whom come in tattered clothes and without proper footwear,” Nandang said.
Hon Daniel Kim, Transition Committee Chairman of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, assured that the donated items would reach the intended recipients in the IDP camp. He urged the public to respect government directives, emphasizing that laws are made for the common good of all citizens.
