The Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN), Nigeria’s Collective Management Organization, has issued an important notice to all owners of event centers, lounges, clubs, dance bars, and hotels. The society stresses the necessity of ensuring that any DJ hired for events is properly licensed, even if the establishment itself holds a valid music license.
MCSN highlights that failing to verify a DJ’s licensing status can result in legal repercussions for the venue owners, as outlined in Section 45 of the Copyright Act. The organization emphasizes that holding a license to play music at a business premise does not exempt the necessity for the DJ to have their own license.
In addition, the MCSN advises individuals organizing events such as weddings, birthday parties, and shows to ensure that both the event center and the DJ are licensed. This precaution is necessary to prevent any potential disruptions to their events.
Furthermore, the MCSN calls on show business professionals and product or brand promoters to take note of these requirements to maintain compliance with copyright regulations.
The notice serves as a reminder of the legal responsibilities associated with playing music publicly and aims to foster adherence to copyright laws within the entertainment industry.
