In a significant security operation, the Plateau State Police Command arrested a middle-aged man allegedly attempting to supply arms to suspected bandits in Jos. The suspect, who arrived from Zamfara State on Wednesday evening, was apprehended near the NTA Park while purportedly trying to deliver the weapons.
The Chairman of the Jos NTA Park, Ibrahim Maikwudi, confirmed the incident to newsmen on Thursday. Maikwudi detailed how the suspect narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob before security operatives intervened.
“It was around 5 pm yesterday (Wednesday, May 29) when the man arrived and was seen loitering opposite the NTA Park, making phone calls and informing someone to come and collect a delivery. Two men nearby overheard his calls and grew suspicious,” Maikwudi explained.
Unable to confront the suspect directly, the two men alerted others at the park. When questioned, the suspect’s responses raised further suspicion.
“Our boys approached him and his answers did not add up. They seized the bag he was carrying, and inside, they found it was full of arms and ammunition,” Maikwudi recounted. The suspect reportedly admitted he was not alone in this mission to Jos, indicating there were others involved.
Fearing the mob might take matters into their own hands, park officials swiftly called the police. Officers from the Special Investigations Bureau Unit arrived promptly and took the suspect into custody.
Despite efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command for an official statement, the spokesman, Alabo Alfred, was unavailable for comment as his phone was switched off.
