The Organised Labour has rejected the Nigerian Government’s fresh proposal for a new minimum wage. Channels Television reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) turned down the offer of N60,000 as the new minimum wage.
The labour unions had previously shifted their demands, lowering their proposed minimum wage from N497,000 to N494,000. A prominent member of the Tripartite Committee, which is negotiating the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers, disclosed that both the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector had initially suggested a monthly minimum wage of N57,000 before increasing it to N60,000.
Earlier, the government had put forward proposals of N48,000 and N54,000, both of which were rejected by the Organised Labour. Initially, Labour had demanded N615,000 but had revised their proposal to N497,000 last week and further reduced it to N494,000 on Tuesday.
With three days remaining until the May 31 deadline set by the labour unions, the Tripartite Committee has yet to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage. Further developments are awaited as the negotiations continue.
