In a bold display of dissent, traders and transporters across Jos and Bukuru Metropolis launched a one-day warning strike today, April 3rd, 2024, organized by the State Joint Transport and Traders and Marketers Association. The strike comes in response to the controversial Executive Order 003, which aims to regulate buildings and vehicular traffic in Plateau State, resulting in the widespread impoundment of articulated vehicles by the government’s taskforce.
The bustling streets of Jos and Bukuru witnessed an unusual sight today, with shops along the Famous Rwang Pam Street and certain sections of Terminus remaining shuttered in compliance with the directive of the one-day strike. Traders voiced their solidarity with the strike, asserting their determination to continue their protest until their grievances are addressed by the government.
Executive Order 003, introduced in 2024, has drawn sharp criticism from the State Joint Transport and Traders and Marketers Association, who argue that the order severely undermines their business operations and economic viability. The crackdown on truck movements, resulting in the impoundment of numerous vehicles, has sparked outrage among traders and transporters alike.
Speaking to the press in Jos, Samaila Garba, Chairman of the Association, expressed grave concern over the repercussions of Executive Order 003. Garba revealed that over 25 trucks were seized on the first day of enforcement, purportedly for offloading goods at various stores and shops in violation of the order. Additionally, the government has imposed hefty fines of N500,000 on each impounded truck, further exacerbating tensions.
While emphasizing their commitment to peace and economic stability, the association vehemently opposes the government’s decision to restrict truck movements, citing security risks associated with parking vehicles in open spaces. Despite prior engagements with government officials yielding no tangible outcomes, the association has escalated their protest through today’s warning strike.
In a bid to address their grievances, the joint association demands the immediate release of impounded trucks, the establishment of designated routes for truck movements, and facilitation of goods transportation to Northeast and Northwestern states. They have pledged to utilize all legal avenues to safeguard their fundamental rights.
As the strike unfolds, traders and transporters stand united in their resolve to challenge Executive Order 003 and ensure their voices are heard by the government. The association remains steadfast in their commitment to pursue a satisfactory resolution to the ongoing dispute.
