In a heartwarming gesture of solidarity, the African Sovereign Movement (ASM), comprised of individuals with extensive expertise across various fields, including development, information technology, investment, education, and healthcare, among others, provided essential relief supplies to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Mangu Local Government area of Plateau State.
On Thursday, March 14th, Michael Green, representing ASM, expressed the group’s commitment to contributing positively to the lives of people in Plateau State. He emphasized the significance of African diaspora communities recognizing and addressing the needs of others, especially those facing hardships. Green stated, “This intervention is our modest contribution to addressing the pressing needs of the community. By acknowledging these needs, we believe we can provide meaningful support, particularly to those most vulnerable.”
ASM presented items including bags of rice, cooking oil, toiletries, and educational materials to both school pupils and displaced children. Green also highlighted ASM’s forthcoming efforts to support and enhance the agricultural sector, particularly in agrarian communities, he said this was significant as the ASM was committed towards bringing its presence to local communities.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the government, Green expressed confidence in Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration, praising its dedication to improving the well-being of Plateau State residents. He commended the governor for his proactive approach and assured the community of ASM’s continued support as it is known for build and supporting systems.
The Camp Director of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Mangu, Plateau State, Mr. Marcus Gumwesh, lauded ASM for their generosity and solidarity with the displaced persons. He revealed that over 100,000 individuals were displaced in Mangu Local Government Area, with approximately 3,500 currently residing in the camp. The director emphasized the ongoing need for assistance, especially as many displaced persons had lost their homes and livelihoods due to violent attacks in 2023 and 2024.
Martha Haruna, a displaced woman in the camp, shared her harrowing experience of fleeing her community after it was attacked by militias in May 2023. She expressed gratitude for ASM’s support and appealed to the government to prioritize the security and rehabilitation of displaced communities, emphasizing the challenges faced by women and children in the camp.
ASM, originally based in the USA, aims to foster self-authentic freedom, government, and financial development for black people. Their vision centers on promoting sovereign participation and establishing partnerships with African entities to realize cultural excellence and human interests.
As ASM extends its support to Plateau State’s displaced persons, their actions resonate with the spirit of solidarity and hope, offering a glimmer of relief in the face of adversity.
