Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, has clarified that the 10th National Assembly will not be reviewing the social media regulation bill. He cited the existence of laws already in place that govern the use of social media in the country as the primary reason.
Akpabio, who was represented by the Senate Committee Chairman on ICT, Sen. Shuiab Salisu, stated this at the Parliamentarian Symposium of Africa Internet Governance Forum (AIGF) on Tuesday.
The event was hosted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in Abuja.
Akpabio said: “I am not sure that there is going to be a specific bill on social media regulation.
“However, there are emailing laws in various areas, social media is just one space.
“So, rather than having specific legislation on social media, I will rather say social media is just one platform.
“The same way people have used regular media platforms to commit libel.”
