In a commendable effort to uplift the youth in the conflict-ridden communities of Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, the Rural Development Counsellor for Christian Churches in Africa (RURCON) took a significant step forward on Thursday, July 3rd, 2023. The non-governmental organization empowered the youth with various vocational tools, including sewing machines, mechanic toolboxes, cake-making utensils and oven, as well as hairdressing and barbering equipment. The beneficiaries of this empowerment had successfully completed a one-year vocational training program.
Mrs. Dinatu Ayizat, the Executive Director of RURCON, explained that the initiative aimed to rescue youths from conflict communities who were trapped in substance abuse and lacked formal education. These individuals often found it difficult to secure job opportunities that required academic qualifications. The training and empowerment aligned with RURCON’s vision to transform African communities holistically, addressing both the spiritual and physical needs of the people. By targeting youths involved in drug abuse, RURCON sought to improve their individual productivity and provide a foundation for leading more fulfilled lives.
The youths were enrolled based on their areas of interest, ensuring that they could pursue vocations that resonated with their passions and talents. Mrs. Ayizat expressed hope that the beneficiaries would leverage the provided tools to establish their own businesses, become economically self-reliant, and contribute positively to society. RURCON has collaborated with traditional leaders to monitor the progress of the trained youths, with the expectation that they would not only set up successful businesses but also mentor and train others.
The prevailing unemployment issue in the country, including limited opportunities in government jobs, led Mrs. Ayizat to urge the youth to be self-reliant and acquire vocational skills. She emphasized that acquired skills were invaluable assets, ensuring that their efforts would never go to waste.
Mr. Nehemiah Wuyep, RURCON’s Director of Programs, expressed delight in achieving over 80% of the project’s objectives. The support provided to equip the trainees with tools relevant to their fields of training has played a vital role in addressing community challenges, particularly drug abuse and involvement in social vices. Through education on the harm caused by substance abuse and psychosocial support, RURCON aimed to mitigate conflicts in various communities.
Mrs. Nanklin Luka, the Peace Building Office and Project Officer, clarified that the project, titled “Conflict Mitigation and Youths Deradicalization in Communities of Busa-Buji, Apata, and Kwanan Shagari in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State,” began in 2021 and had now completed its second phase graduating 27 youths, which started in May 2022. The initiative sought to deradicalize “special youths” engaged in drug abuse, providing training and support to help them reduce harmful substance intake and promote harmony within the community.
Receiving the vocational startup packs with gratitude, the beneficiaries expressed their joy and excitement. They appreciated RURCON’s efforts in not only providing them with new skills but also empowering them with the necessary tools to start their businesses. Community leaders also acknowledged the positive impact of RURCON’s presence in their neighborhoods, bringing about increased peace and engagement among the youth.
The initiative has undoubtedly brought about positive changes in the lives of the youth in Jos North, inspiring hope and potential for a better future. With RURCON’s continued dedication, more youths are expected to gain access to life-changing opportunities and contribute significantly to society through their newfound vocational skills.
