As part of activities for ConnexUs Influencer for Change Network, Blogger and Influencer, Matthew Tegha held a one-day Media Literacy Meeting on Curbing Misinformation with Youth Leaders of Miango community in Bassa LGA on Saturday 24th July 2021.
The meeting was held at the Irigwe Traditional Council Hall with youth leaders, representatives of various communities, groups and associations in attendance within Bassa community. The youths were led by Comr. Peter Beni the National President of Irigwe Youth Movement.
The program was centered on the Theme “Curbing Misinformation Amidst Pandemic Times” made possible by the European Union instrument for promoting peace and stability.
ConnexUs influencer for Change, Matthew Tegha went to deliver an insightful talk on ways to identify misinformation and further discussed how communities can work together to curb misinformation giving the rising challenges both locally and globally
Matthew Tegha said “Information from both online and offline has affected the way we respond to the challenges around us. Information is vital however I can tell you that the way reacts most times is a direct result of the general information we can gather.
As such misinformation has been one of the major factors militating against preventive and control efforts on Covid19 pandemic and challenges within communities, He said
He encouraged youths to collaborate more and be more proactive and deliberate in checking information as part of efforts in curbing misinformation. He said as young people, we must take responsibility and be guided by the right information as he highlighted tips to curb misinformation.
Comr. Peter Beni, National President of Irigwe Youth Movement, noted that the meeting was apt giving the many incidences within the community.
He gave many examples of misinformation within the community especially as it is faced with challenges. He, therefore, gave his assurances that most of the issues being discussed were going to be put to good use and go a long way in curbing such misinformation or disinformation.
Other youth leaders at the meeting also shared their experiences and went on to discuss further actions which will lead to checking and verification of information to curb the troubling issues of misinformation.
