Extension Tension as Covid-19 Plateau Lockdown Hits Last Day

Plateau State Governor, Simon Bako Lalong on Friday 10th April, 2020
flagged off a Fumigation Exercise after declaring a statewide total
lockdown for 7days which ends today Wednesday 15th April by 11:00pm.
Governor Lalong in issuing the state lockdown, said Plateau was using
the opportunity to fumigate the entire 17 local government in the state.

However after the lockdown order was issued, the government was greeted with a lot of condemnation from different quarters who questioned the rational behind a total shutdown considering that there were already some measure of restrictions announced a week earlier. further questions were asked as the state was also yet to record any
case of coronavirus.

The flag-off of the fumigation exercise had its own set of criticism, from questions on the need for
such fumigation exercise based on the efficiency of preventing coronavirus.

First it is absolutely commendable that state has been able to manage itself without recording any case of Covid-19 with the toll in Nigeria recorded at 372 cases and still rising daily. The citizens in Plateau state should also be applauded for adhering to the lockdown by complying to one of the most well managed ‘total lockdown’ in the fight against this pandemic despite the scarcity of palliatives. Also not forgetting the relentless efforts of all security personnel who guarded the situation. The attitude and cooperation of the state shows why it is yet to record any case as one of the golden rule of managing the spread of Covid-19 is staying at home.

Today mark’s Day 7, which signifies the end to the lockdown and the Fumigation exercise as such it is of note that the general public expects some level relaxation of the total lockdown from the state government as HUNGER has taken the lead on major discussions surrounding a ‘rumored’ extension by the Government.

The full compliance to the total lockdown of plateau citizens should not be taken for granted rather it should spur the government to think new ways of remedying the situation at hand.

Governor Simon Lalong will surely get all necessary advice from experts to inform his state wide broadcast on where next the state is headed in the fight against the dreaded enemy that is ravaging the world at large.

In whatever informed decision the state will take, cognizance should be given to the fact that the public is “hoping For the best” and will trust the decision of the government just like it did with the total lockdown”.
