How Prepared is Plateau State in Managing COVID-19 and Sustaining Peace

It is no longer news that the COVID-19 pandemic is ravaging the entire
Globe with the figures gradually rising in Nigeria as it has become difficult getting Nigerians to adhere to the
various parameters set by government to contain the spreed of the
pandemic.

Plateau State has not been left out in its fair share as
citizens are not in full compliance given that the state is yet to
record any case of the outbreak.

To safeguard public health and help flatten the growth curve for COVID-19, the Plateau State government had announced a number of measures including  restriction of movements, ban of any social or religious gathering in excess of 50 people.

The restriction order was flouted last Friday by the spiritual leader of  Jamma’atu Izalatil Bid’a Waikamatis Sunnah, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, as he conveyed a Friday congregational prayer despite an order against that from the federal and state governments clearly undermining the safety measures against the spread of COVID-19 thereby potentially undermining the peace of the state. It was clear that the Sheik had gone against federal laws and also undermined the regulation for public safety by the Plateau State government.

ThePlateau StateGovernor, Simon Lalong, was then tasked with averting what could have disturbed the fragile peace in Plateau State as many called for an immediate arrest of the offending Sheik which may further disturb the peace, Governor Lalong opted to have a more practicable approach at addressing the issues. This week, Sheikh Jingir had expressed regret over the incidence and pledged his continuous support for peace and willingness to join the government to fight the coronavirus.

The state government have gone ahead to unfold strategies aimed at containing the spread of the dreaded coronavirus disease – a pandemic  with more than 785,897 already affected globally in over 180 countries. Plateau have created a Situation Room, deploying technology to tame COVID-19, reporting incidence of coronavirus cases, evaluate field reports, provide information on index and  contact tracing as well as provide first rate information on COVID-19 trends locally,  nationally and globally so as to prevent panic and allow citizens and government  make informed decisions.

Despite this laudable efforts by Governor Simon Lalong in leading Plateau state through this trying times some questions are yet unanswered as while on assessment visit the Governor talked about shortage of ventilators. Also giving the peculiarity of the state, the government is yet to ascertain if it will be rolling out any sort of welfare package to help cushion the effect ofthe
various parameters set by government to contain the spreed of the
pandemic.

PlateauGovernment has made available three Isolation facilities Bingham University Teaching Hospital Jos,Plateau state Specialist Hospital Josand the Jos University Teaching Hospital.

But how prepared is thePlateau state Ministry of health as the coronavirus pandemic is one that has challenged even the great United states of America as such one can never be over prepared.
