A fire
has swept across three villages: Garin Kaduwa, Daawa and Samo all in
Nangere Local Government Area of Yobe State on Saturday leading to the
loss of houses, other properties and foodstuffs.
Though the cause of the fire could not be
traced but was said to have been jostled by the wind set the surrounding
local housing, fanned by a strong wind, the flames reached the
villages, wreaking havoc on the residents.
These areas are old and farming Communities, with a large number of listed wooden local buildings.
During a visit to Garin Kaduwa village 37
households suffered great losses as their houses were all consumed by
the blaze and no one is so far believed to have been injured.
Firemen had little hope of saving any of
the villages’ buildings because of the location of the villages and
distance from Sabon Garin Nangere, the headquarters of Nangere Local
Government Area.
The Director Personnel Management (DPM)
overseeing Nangere Local Government, Usman Hassan Makeri confirmed the
incident to Independent, pointing out that “yes there was fire disaster
in four villages under my Local Government Area, we responded rapidly by
visiting the scene to sympathize with the victims, definitely they
suffered losses, I have immediately directed my community development
officer to get the full details so that on Monday we would send to Yobe
State Emergency Management Agency for intervention.
We’re also in touch with the Yobe State
House of Assembly Member representing Nangere constituency all in an
effort to alleviate their sufferings.”
He said that the victims were happy with his visit on them and assured them of quick Government intervention.
One of the victims, Malam Muhammad Kaduwa
said that the fire was the result of the hot and dry weather conditions
in the area, with a wind flow.
