A 120-year-old woman has been laid to rest in a custom-made dolphin-shaped coffin in the Oboro community of Bomadi Local Government Area, Delta State, sparking widespread attention both locally and on social media.

The unique burial arrangement was chosen to honour the deceased’s lifelong dedication to fishing, the only trade she practiced throughout her life. Community members said the dolphin-shaped casket symbolizes her deep connection to the river and her contributions to the local fishing heritage.

“The decision was intentional,” a community source explained, “aimed at celebrating her enduring legacy as a fisherwoman and telling the story of her life in a way that reflects her identity and achievements.”

The funeral has drawn admiration for its creativity and for highlighting the cultural significance of fishing in the Oboro community.
